I see the difference

I see the difference

The College of Podiatry is launching, on behalf of the Office for Students and in partnership with the British and Irish Orthoptics Society, the British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists and the Society and College of Radiographers, a new allied health professions recruitment campaign to encourage more people to consider the four smaller professions represented as career options and apply to study in England.

The campaign is aimed at 16 – 19 year olds considering their first undergraduate degree, and mature students and career changers aged 24 – 38. It builds on the work carried out by our colleagues in HEE this summer to promote the smaller AHPs within the wider #Knowaboutnursing and #AHPsintoaction campaign. The campaign aims to increase applications to relevant undergraduate courses through UCAS applications in 2019 and 2020.

What is SIHED?

The Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines (SIHED) programme is a £3m, three-year initiative to help raise awareness of allied health disciplines, and in particular strengthen the sustainability of four smaller professions: podiatry, therapeutic radiography, prosthetics and orthotics, and orthoptics. It focuses on activities to support recruitment to and delivery of these disciplines, and to increase understanding of the student market for health, including the mature student segment. The programme is delivered by the College of Podiatry in partnership with the Society of Radiographers, the British and Irish Orthoptic Society, the British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists, and the Universities of Salford, Sheffield and Liverpool.

Key messages

Our research has indicated that the students most likely to consider these professions are seeking a career in which their ongoing contact with patients and colleagues is directly linked to making a positive difference to someone else’s life. Key messages throughout the campaign will be:

  • Graduates from these courses have high employment rates

  • These are professions that offer a lot of variety, both in day to day activities and through dynamic career pathways

  • Patient contact time is high and these professions make a real difference to people’s lives

The campaign launches on the 28th September 2018 and will run until the 31st January 2019.

Campaign activities

The campaign will run through the social media accounts of our four partner professions – The British and Irish Orthoptics Society, the British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists, the College of Podiatry, and the Society and College of Radiographers. Digital adverts will run throughout the campaign period, and we will also be developing a range of social media assets that our partners and supports can utilize throughout.

We have developed a new campaign hub, www.iseethedifference.co.uk where potential students can find out more about the professions and search four courses in England using an interactive map.

We will also have a downloadable print ready booklet about the professions for public use, and are developing resources for use at careers events and in schools.

How to get involved

Digital advertising will be running on Facebook and on targeted websites where students gain information about career options. However, we would also be grateful for your ongoing support to keep this campaign visible to your organisations members, colleagues and the wider public. Some suggestions on how to get involved are:

  • Join in the campaign on social media.  You can either share posts from our partner organisations, or create your own messages about how you make a difference through your career. Please use the hashtag #iseethedifference

  • Share information about our campaign on your websites and in your newsletters
