The #ISeeTheDifference campaign went to Skills London

The I See The Difference campaign headed to the country’s biggest careers fair with the goal of inspiring the next generations of podiatry students.

Skills London is held at the ExCel centre in East London and with over 34,000 attendees is the largest jobs and careers event for 15-24 year olds in the UK. We attended the two day event as part of the Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines (SIHED) outreach offer.

The event is different to some other careers fairs, in that it aims to use more interactive methods to inspire the young people attending – giving them an opportunity to visualise more clearly the career options ahead of them. Skills London also includes a teachers hub, where the outreach team were able to raise awareness of career opportunities amongst teachers and careers advisors. All attendees were signposted to the campaign hub website iseethedifference.co.uk where they can find out lots more about the professions and find course information.

Of course, selling the professions isn’t hard when the benefits are so clear. Podiatry offers great career progression opportunities with good jobs available after graduation. The range and variety of career pathways is exciting, and high patient contact time ensures that podiatrists know they can make a real difference to people’s lives.

In coming months, we’re going to be at many more careers fairs, reaching out to future podiatrists and other Allied Health Professionals.

This is just one part of our outreach programme, led by our team of officers. They are also setting up schemes to speak to students directly, in schools and colleges up and down the country.

If you know of any future events we should be aware of, or want to support our outreach programme then contact Rachel at rachel.middleton@cop.org.uk

If you want to volunteer in schools and help spread the word about podiatry, you can sign up to the Inspiring the Future programme on their website – inspiringthefuture.org

The #ISeeTheDifference campaign is part of the Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines (SIHED) programme. SIHED is a £3m, three-year initiative to help build the sustainability of four key health professions - podiatry, therapeutic radiography, prosthetics and orthotics, and orthoptics.

For more information on SIHED, visit the Office for Students website.
