NHS pay negotiations update



Earlier today the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care made a formal pay offer to the NHS unions in England including the Society.

Following several months of negotiations, the government has offered a 3 year pay deal from 2018 until 2021 which it has committed to fully fund and is worth approximately £4.2billion.

The minimum that will be received over 3 years will be 6.5% and many staff will receive pay rises of between 10% and 35%. We believe that this is important as it takes us past the Brexit negotiations and Britain’s exit from Europe but also confirms the government’s stance that the era of austerity is over.

The deal itself will see a real increase in pay for all our NHS England members for the first time since 2010, and includes a refresh of Agenda for Change pay scales.

This refresh includes the abolition of Band 1, the removal overlap between grades and the shortening of pay spines, allowing a quicker rise to the top of the band.

The government were keen to increase productivity as part of this deal and you may be aware of the proposal to remove 1 day’s annual leave from all staffs entitlements. This was vigorously opposed by the Society and our trade union colleagues and I am pleased to announce that through further negotiation, this trade-off has been removed from the proposal, meaning that your annual leave entitlement stays intact.

It is the Society’s belief that this proposal represents a good deal for our membership. Steve Jamieson CEO and General Secretary said:

“The events of the past year have shown how greatly the public can rely on the NHS in their time of need and how passionate they are to defend it and its staff. It is heartening to see that the government has reflected this in a pay offer that goes someway to demonstrating the value of NHS staff, including podiatrists.”


We will shortly be seeking your opinion on whether you, as members feel this deal is acceptable or not through a ballot. Before we do so we want to make sure you have all the answers to your questions before you make that decision.

Talks will continue in respect of members working for the NHS in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
