2016 Valuation of the NHS Pension Scheme

2016 Valuation of the NHS Pension Scheme

We would like to draw your attention to this Ministerial statement which was issued on Wednesday 30th January 2019. The findings of the Court of Appeal will have a big impact on our members in two ways.

Firstly, the finding that the Tapered Protection provided in the move from both the 1995 and 2008 Pension Schemes to the Career Average Re-evaluated 2015 scheme has been found to be discriminatory on the grounds of age and indirectly gender and ethnicity. The potential outcome is to compensate those affected by the tapering. The Government is seeking to challenge this.

Secondly, the CoP has been involved in complex negotiations with Westminster and the devolved Governments about some beneficial changes to the NHS pension scheme and, as a result of the Court of Appeal findings, these changes will be put on hold.

The CoP will be seeking a clearer understanding of what the Government plans to do and will report back to our members. We shall be doing our best to protect our members' interests.
