The NHS Clinical Evaluation Team: how you can get involved

The NHS Clinical Evaluation Team (CET) reviews everyday healthcare products used by the NHS to identify high-quality, products that meet NHS requirements, and that are sourced on a national scale; and to make it as easy as possible for frontline NHS staff to pick the best products to enable effective patient care.

The NHS CET is funded by the Department of Health, and is made up of senior NHS clinicians from a variety of backgrounds including nursing, procurement, physiotherapy, paramedics and podiatry.

The NHS CET process engages frontline NHS clinicians to give their professional opinion on what they require from the products they commonly use. This information is used to develop clinical criteria for evaluating each product. The resulting report helps NHS staff choose the most appropriate products for their needs. This process is undertaken “for the NHS by the NHS”.

The cost of the consumables is not considered during the process, only their performance against the evaluation criteria. The team cannot remove items from the supply chain, and organisations are not obliged to take their findings into account. The added value comes from ensuring products are suitable for clinicians’ needs, which reduces waste, and may inform the demand for products.

You can find the completed reports on the NHS CET website, here:http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/CET
